Hot Refurbished Sale Continues, EOS R & Some Lenses Now Sold Out

The Canon Direct Store refurbished sale continues, but we’re seeing a number of items sell out (and go out-of-stock) today. The RF 70-200mm f/4L IS, EOS R, and RF 24-105L are no longer available.

There are still many incredible deals in-stock, but quantity is limited, so we don’t know how long they will last. Check out our refurbished stock tracker for a list of all items available. Refurbished items from the Canon Direct Store come with a 1-year Canon USA warranty.

Yeah that EOS R was a no-brainer. I bought one in this sale.

In this sale, I bought an EOS R, an RF 50mm f1.8 STM, and a control ring adapter. Should I also buy an EF 50mm f1.4? I’ve always heard it was a poo-poo lens. It does seem like great value at $150. Thoughts ladies and gents?

Have your EOS R order been fulfilled? My EOS R order has been cancelled for unknown reason. I think Canon does not have enough of this camera to fulfill all of the orders they received.

I actually ordered two EOS Rs (body only) as my brother also decided he wants one. The first I ordered about 30 minutes after the sale started thinking they would run out. That camera has already shipped. I have not received a shipping notification about the second one yet. I placed the second order later.

When did you place your order?

Has Canon emailed you that your order has been cancelled?

This is why we always tell our readers to order quickly in these sales. Canon is notorious for dropping orders (or not updating their site inventory promptly after they sell out).

Thankfully, I placed my first order at 12:25am on Monday, within 10 minutes of the prices updating to Cyber Monday prices. That order shipped out on Tuesday at 6pm ET.

The orders I placed Monday evening are still showing as “processing” / “pending”. Fingers crossed they will actually ship out. Would Canon fulfill orders with new cameras once they have ran out of genuinely refurbished ones? Have they done that in the past?

In the past they would eventually mark the orders as โ€œbackorderโ€ but never fill/ship them.

Thank you guys for sending a pre-warning email out the day before! Without that, I could not have placed my order so early.

I placed my first order just after midnight on Monday. That order got cancelled and when I talked with the rep next day, she told me that it may happened due to credit card issue. She then reordered the camera for me and that order got cancelled too. I just ordered over the phone again this morning when I saw the camera is back in stock for a brief time using different credit card . I have not got any cancellation email yet. Fingers crossed for the good outcome!

One of the orders I placed in this sale is still showing as “Pending”. I put this order in at 10:23pm Eastern Time on Cyber Monday, Nov 28. It is still showing as “Pending”, not even as “Processing”. Have your orders shipped? Should I be worried?

Mine is showing “Pending” as well, and I placed my order on the 29th. It wasn’t even for one of the “hotter” items like any of the R cameras or RF glass. It was the 17-40 f4. And it is still showing it’s in stock.

Fantastic! Is it really refurbished or new that was sold as refurbished?

It looks pretty good, almost like new but it is definitely a refurb.
I can tell somebody has touched the lens. Functionality & Mechanically is as good as new. Still very worth it for the price especially if you used the site for 15% cashback.

Yes, the order I placed early on Cyber Monday has also been delivered. The one “Pending” is the one I placed at 10:23pm Eastern Time on Monday, Nov 28. Fingers crossed we all receive what we bought. I’d be more relaxed if it showed as “Processing”.

Are you guys receiving genuinely refurbished bodies / lenses or in fact new bodies / lenses sold as refurbished?

My EOS R has arrived. I’m traveling / not home. My wife’s brother looked at it / I saw it via FaceTime only. It came in a Canon PowerShot Vixia brown cardboard box. No visible sign of prior use. No scratches. The camera is marked refurb with a small hole punched in the foil that has the serial number, right after the serial number.ย

I won’t be able to check shutter count until I get back to the U.S.

    Looks good so far.

This unit was ordered within the first 10 minutes of the sale.

How does yours look? Looks refurb or new?

I received shipping notice for my 17-40 f4L lens on yesterday, Friday 12/2, and it arrived today, Saturday 12/3. It also arrived in the brown Canon PowerShot Vixia box. To the best of my knowledge, all refurbished items from the Canon Direct store do. The 6D, 17-55mm f2.8, 24mm f2.8 Pancake, and 430EX II flashes that I ordered back in 2015 all did then as well.

As for the camera, chances are it will have at least some shutter counts on it, from a few hundred to a few thousand. It really just depends on what the manner of “refurbished” is. My 6D had around 300 shutter actuations. Chances are it was a batch test unit, pulled off the line for quality control inspections of whatever manufacturing batch it was a part of.

Refurb units are either batch test units, or store returns that have been requalified.

Does Canon ever sell new cameras as fake refurbished as a means of price discrimination? Many companies do.

I suspect thatโ€™s the case here given the number of โ€œrefurbishedโ€ cameras they sell / sold in this sale, which is likely in the tens of thousands(?). I find it unlikely that they have that many genuinely refurbished EOS Rs / RF 50 1.8 STMs.

          December 3, 2022 at 9:26 pm EDT

Let me add that all these huge super-mega “refurbished” sales miraculously tend to happen at the end of a product’s life cycle.

Notice that there are no huge super-mega refurb sales on the R5 or R6.

Does Canon not batch test R5s and R6s as much as they batch test Rs and RPs? Do people return less R5s and R6s? Doubtful. It is more likely that many of these cameras (probably not all) are actually brand new and were simply market as refurb as a simple (and very logical) means of price discrimination.

Price discrimination is wonderful, and it makes good business sense.

I will never buy a “new” camera ever again. Especially as all cameras from the past 10 years have pretty much the same image quality (with great advancements in autofocus tech, of course).

I think refurbs come from different sources during the life-cycle of a camera. Early refurbs are production line rejections or returned cameras. Late refurbs are either overstock cameras (price discrimination) or retailers returning unsold stock (rare, but it happens).

I wish Sony had big “refurbished” sales. (I run and love both systems.) Alas nobody “returns” / “batch tests” Sonys. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™

Yes, that’s what I think as well.

Alas no 28-70 f2.0 refurbs. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ I would buy that beast for like $2,000. Maybe in a couple years.

Anyone here received the 15% cashback from raku10? Somehow it doesn’t show up on my shopping trips.
