Why You Shouldn’t Miss the Canon Store’s Insane Black Friday Sale

We’ve been posting deals here on Canon Price Watch for over 13 years. After every big deal, we get emails for days from readers who missed it: regretting “the deal that got away”. We’re sure that once today’s Canon Direct Store Black Friday refurbished sale is over, we’re going to get many, many, emails from readers in the months to come.

The deals in this refurb sale are absolutely incredible. It’s not just one item being discounted, but the entire slate of Canon RF products. This is truly the big fish, the biggest of big deals. The sale ends on November 30th, but the stock won’t last until then — we’re starting to see things sell out, already.

No doubt it will sell out, as many of these prices are the lowest price seen yet for refurbished lenses or cameras, and by a wide margin: the EOS R5 at $2199.00 is a $800 price drop from the previous best refurbished price, and the EOS R6 Mark II at $1799.00 is over $300 better.

These prices are so low that in many cases they are hundreds of dollars below the price used dealers will offer when purchasing from you! For example, the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM (now $1299.00) can be sold to major dealers for $1450-$1500. Any lens purchase in this sale is low risk, as you can easily sell to a used dealer (or on the used market) for more than you’re paying.

It’s very hard to pick the best deals, because they’re all so amazing, but here are our favorite. The important thing is to take advantage of these prices if you can — but if you do miss this opportunity, please don’t email us about it! 🙂

Check out our refurbished stock tracker for a list of all items available. You can also check out our posts — RF cameras and RF “L” lenses, camera + lens bundles, EF camera and lens clearance, non-L RF lenses.

But then, what about the EF system?

There are EF cameras and lenses in the sale, many are the lowest seen yet as well. They’re only slightly lower than the previous best, so while extremely good, it’s not earth-shattering. You can read our post summarizing those deals.

Right. A lot of good stuff but the RF is priced way better. I would have guessed the opposite for this sale.

Supply and demand. There just isn’t a lot of supply left of new EF lenses (most are no longer manufactured, and anything that still is manufactured is probably done in very small runs). Refurbished lenses typically come from things like returns, repairs, and production issues, so there are likely few EF refurbished lenses being “produced” these days.

So Canon doesn’t have many to sell, and is likely in no rush to sell what they have — thus, no EF lens deals, and none in the foreseeable future.

A great benchmark is the refurbished “24-70mm” lens — the RF version is $1299 today and the EF version is only $100 less at $1199.

Somebody at Canon must’ve listened when I wrote in their forum that the sale prices are an insult compared to Nikon.

There’s a small chance it might get restocked before the sale ends (but will usually be a small quantity and sell out quickly). You can set a price alert notification on our site, and we’ll email you if it’s in-stock again.

Someone’s listening to us, because a bunch of lenses just sold out within the last ten minutes, including the RF 24-70, RF 70-200, and RF 28-70.

Damn, missed out on the 50mm f1.2 and 28-70mm F2. Could have really used either of those. Maybe they will restock.

I just bought an R8 before the sale. Should I buy the R5 instead?

Thank you for encouraging me to spend more money on a lens! I have the Tamron EF 150-600 mm (I will now sell) but I just purchased the RF 100-500 mm. $$$ but a great deal.

Ordered a Refurbished Canon R5 with standard shipping. Used the CanonPriceWatch link so they would get credit for referral. Shipped yesterday from Hayward, California. Since I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, I got it today.

Apologies I was mistaking refurb for new items

  11. November 26, 2023 at 10:18 am EDT

Super frustrated with canon. My order for the 100-500mm went though then I get an email that it was cancelled. It was in stock. Then, I tried again, the same thing happened. Anyone have a direct email to complain about this? Thanks, in advance.
