Advantages of the EOS R
- Better sensor. The EOS R features a 30.3mp sensor, where as the EOS RP features a 26.2mp sensor (apparently the same sensor re-used from the EOS 6D Mark II).
- Faster burst shooting, faster shutter speed. The EOS R supports 8 fps shooting, vs 5 fps for the EOS RP. The EOS R also supports a max shutter speed of 1/8000 (vs. 1/4000 for the EOS RP).
- Better AF sensitivity. Both feature Dual Pixel CMOS AF, but the EOS R can focus down to -6EV, where as the EOS RP can only support -5EV.
- Body controls, LCD, and EVF. The EOS R has a larger EVF, higher resolution LCD, and a top LCD control panel (befitting its larger build).
Advantages of the EOS RP
- Price. This is one of the biggest advantages of the EOS RP — at just $1299 (with a free adapter), compare with a street price of $2169 for the EOS R — a massive delta of $870. That’s nearly enough to pick up a RF 24-105mm F4 L IS lens!
- Size and weight. It’s amazing how small the EOS RP is, with exterior dimensions of 132.5 x 85 x 70mm compared to the 135.8 x 98.3 x 84.4mm of the EOS R. It also weighs 140g lighter at 440g (vs. 580g of the EOS R).
