FAQ about Canon USA Price Increase + Impact on Refurbished Pricing

Several CPW readers have written in to ask questions about the Canon price increase, so here’s an impromptu Q&A session!

Q: When will refurbished prices go up? [Another website] mentioned that future refurbished prices will also go up as a result of the price increase. Do you know when this will happen and how much they will go up?

A: Those other websites are unfortunately inaccurate. Refurbished prices have already gone up. Typically, “regular price” for refurbished is is pegged to either 80% (historically) or 90% (all recent arrivals, including RF lenses) of the pre-rebate MAP price. With a $100 increase, we see a $80 or $90 increase to the refurbished price:

Q: Do you think this is a temporary price increase? Will we ever see prices come back down again?

A: This is speculation on my part, but the various price increases we’ve seen in the last years are probably the “new base” price for these lenses going forward. It’s likely costing Canon more to procure inputs, manufacture, and distribute these lenses at the moment. While some of the extra cost (e.g. premiums due to chip shortage, container shipping) may diminish after the pandemic, I would guess that the bulk of the increase — and thus, these prices, will remain.

I’m sure there will be future deals and rebates once supply improves, but it will take some patience to get there. I’m hoping, but not too optimistic that there will be an end-of-2022 deal season. If you see yourself getting good value from a recently released camera or lens over the next 12-18 months, you may as well buy now, as I really don’t think we’re going to see stellar deals over that time period.

Q: How can I buy at the old price?

A: Amazon is still listing some items at the old price (for now). They’ve already increased the price on the RF 100-500L, unfortunately.

Amazon: RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS for $2954.95 (reg. $3099)

Amazon is discounting the RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS to $2954.95 — compare with a regular price of $3099! This is sold by Amazon proper, not by a 3rd party. This is below Canon’s MAP price so we don’t think this pricing will last long. Two are in-stock.

Canon Direct Store Showing Stock of EOS R3, $5999

Canon Direct Store is showing stock of the EOS R3 ($5999.00). Other customers have reported that online orders placed very soon after these “restocks” have shipped.

Beat the Increase? Amazon Still Showing Old Prices, RF 100-500 $2799

Not all dealers have applied the Canon USA price increase yet — notably, Amazon is still showing stock of many items at the old price, including the RF 100-500mm F4-7.1L IS USM for $2799.00. We don’t expect this to last, so if you’re interested, please complete your order soon.

Canon USA Price Increase on RF & EF Lenses, Including RF 100-500

We’ve seen another overnight price increase from Canon USA on many popular Canon RF and EF lenses. Items have gone up across the authorized dealer network, with most items going up between $100 and $200. Included in the price increase is the RF 100-500mm F4-7.1L IS USM, which is seeing its second price increase in five months.

Official communications from Canon to dealers referred to an “ever-changing market situation” driving the price increases — the camera industry continues to be plagued by supply chain and distribution challenges, as well as the increased cost of manufacturing with COVID restrictions and measures in-place.

Refurbished prices for the lenses have also seen a similar price increase. It looks like Amazon is still showing the old prices (for the time being).

Hot: EOS R, $300 Price Drop at Amazon (Now $1299)

Amazon has lowered the price on the EOS R to $1299.99, a $300 price drop. We aren’t seeing this deal at other dealers yet, so we don’t know if this is just a temporary Amazon deal, or new Canon pricing. This is the lowest price seen yet for a brand new EOS R from an authorized dealer. This is sold and shipped by Amazon, so it comes with a 1-year Canon USA warranty.
