Damn really good deal. I bought the other package yesterday, w/ mic and printer, this seems to be better. Wonder if they would price adjust or I’ll have to return everything and rebuy. (I didn’t see the CarPAK though when I went to check out, i’ll have to call to order)

They likely won’t be able to price adjust as this bundle is the same pre-rebate price (just different accessories, and the accessories come with Mail-in Rebates). You’d probably have to return and re-buy.

  10. November 21, 2018 at 9:50 am EDT

Ah, the great black friday self debate. Same dilemma as last year, only this year is an even better price (400 dollars cheaper this year). To 5D or not to 5D, that is the question. Deal ends tonight at midnight, and 12 month, 0% financing is available. Deal won’t be this good again until next year, but they likely will extend the deal through the weekend (they did last year, actually I think right up to the end of the year). I would think the big difference this year is that I have started to take on clients, and look to do that more next year. The 5D adds two advantages over my 80D; better low light shooting and better portraits. From a technical point of view, it has the ability to record redundantly too, meaning it can save to a backup card in case one goes bad (big advantage for event shooting). I even have more lenses that will work on it now than I did a year ago, and I have even more gear I could sell off to help pay for it. I think this year it looks like a much better idea than it did last year, and I know I can put a camera like that to work.

The big negatives though, well, Canon is moving in a new direction with their cameras, as is the entire industry. It is likely in the next year there will be a new mirrorless camera from Canon that is basically the 5D only without the mirror. All the lenses I have will be adaptable to it (literally all of them), but I don’t know the specs yet, so I have no way to compare. By the time I even hear the specs this opportunity will be long gone. One thing I can be sure of though is that new mirrorless will be at least 1000 dollars more than the 5D is today, and that is a big deal too (I likely won’t buy it until prices come down, and that will be a long way off). The only thing I really wish the 5D had is a tilting screen, I think everything else about it is right where it needs to be for this price, especially the weather sealing (can hold up to rain). I have no doubt I can use it for what I want to do.

Damn you Adorama and BnH! šŸ™‚

      November 21, 2018 at 10:12 am EDT

I don’t know if I’d look at Canon expanding their mirrorless efforts is a negative. It gives people who want a mirrorless system an option, and those who still want an optical viewfinder have the 5DM4. The 5DM4 will still be just as good of a camera then as it is today, and if you decide to move over, there will still be a healthy used market to sell yours into. And there’s also the option to keep the 5DM4 as a second body; there are great advantages to having a second body that has controls that are largely similar to your primary.

      1. November 21, 2018 at 1:28 pm EDT

I’m saying negative as in my own personal pros and cons, not overall. The 5D is still going to be a good camera, in fact I have often suggested to people that the mkIII is still a good camera if they are jsut doing portraits and basic shooting, since it still takes great photos years after it has become obsolete. I’m saying from my point of view there will likely be things about the next mirrorless that I wish the 5DmkIV had (flip out screen likely, and also improved AF point spread like the R has, as well as exposure preview in the EVF).

Even though they are not on the deathbed yet, DSLR cameras are entering their twilight, and I think this will happen in the mid to high end models before the low end stuff (Rebels). Take a look at the RF lenses already available, it should be clear that Canon is aiming at the high end with the mirrorless line, in spite of the first body being more “entry” level (their scheme has always been to release the lower end stuff first, then hear feedback, then go to the higher end). I think we will continue to see support for the low end Rebels, but mostly just bodies, nothing all that serious in lens updates (too bad since I am really wanting a 17-55mm F2.8 mkII, or an EF-S 16mm F1.4 or at least F1.8). Probably one more prosumer APS-C, the 90D, and one more version of the 7D, the mkIII. I feel that we will not see another 5D, but I could be wrong, I doubt we see a 5DsR mkII like we all thought we would (or at least I did). Maybe a new 1D, since it’s the flagship. In any case, it’s kind of hard to see the future, but one thing is certain is that DSLRs will become less in demand, and resale value will drop for sure. For me though, this has never been one of the reasons I have ever chosen a camera or lens. If I cared about resale more than current price and intended use I would probably never buy anything, I would spend too much time debating it with myself. I think this is the deal I have been waiting for, but I remember my self debate last year too. I talked myself out of it (and also there was a huge F up at the bank that handles the adorama credit that screwed me out of 12 month financing), and I already have 2 80D cameras that I am doing well with. Just wish I had better low light/high ISO performance and 2 card slots. The 5D solves those problems, but then again, it doesn’t stop at the body. I would need a 24-70mm F2.8 at some point too, and that ain’t cheap either.

I’m overthinking it, yes, but at the same time it is a lot of money to spend, but this year it is different, as I stated already. I have some time to think about it. I would also bet this deal keeps coming back too, until at least christmas. It might be a little different each time, but the core will be the same (5D, grip, printer, 13 month care pack). It did last year.

I have a similar dilemma. Just to give some background, I’m upgrading to my first FF from a T6S. One of the main reasons for this upgrade is because I’ll be doing my first wedding gig in a few months time for a friend. It was between the EOS R and the 5D4. I just ordered the EOS R through CPW last week since I wanted to have a FF camera in hand before my upcoming trip. That way I can start getting used to the FF world and can practice a lot.
Now that these deals have been released, I now find myself questioning my R purchase. Should I return the EOS R and jump on this deal instead? I’ve still not yet received my EOS R.
They are both going to take great pics no doubt. The 5D4 is certainly a better deal overall for the price. But it is also a 2yr old camera. The EOS R is newer tech but, it is a first generation release which is bound to have some bugs. I’m sure canon will be releasing firmware updates over the next year or so for the EOS R. So far, the reviews on the R have been very mixed.
One of the main reasons I’m leaning slightly in favor of the new R, despite some of the negativity surrounding it, is mainly because some of the flexibility that it offers me. As you can imagine, I have a couple of good EF-S lenses coming from the T6S. EF-S 10-18 and the legendary sigma 18-35. I’ll be able to use both these great lenses on the R. I also have a couple of L lenses (24-70 F2.8 and 100 F2.8) which I’m sure will get great results paired to the R.
Right now, I mostly shoot landscapes and family sessions. I’ve done a couple of weddings as backup shooter. And as mentioned above, will be doing my first full wedding soon. I still don’t consider myself to be a professional shooter by any means.
But since I’m starting to get into wedding photography, I’m a little wary about the R. It’s here that the 5D4 would probably be a much better option. Especially with dual card slots and overall AF accuracy.
Not sure what to do. Maybe I’m overthinking it too and should just stick with the R. And just hope that the upcoming firmware updates will resolve some of the AF issues that some reviewers are talking about.

          @harini,

Get the 6D MKII and sell your T6S. Get a CSP Gold membership here: http://cps.usa.canon.com/loans/loans.shtml – you can sell the freebies they send you to get the price down to ~$50-60 and you get free maintenance on 5 items.

Get the 5D MKIV or 1DX on a free 10-day loan through CPS for the wedding and use the 6D MKII as your backup camera. In 6 months the price of the 5D MKIV will start declining and you can pick it up if you like it enough to switch from 6D MKII. I did a coworkers private wedding ceremony with 2 6D MK1’s and they loved the pictures – the glass is more important.

I switched to the Sony A7RIII rather than waiting for Canon’s FF equivalent which may be years down the line and so far I’m happy. I buy these printer deals to re-sell and purchase more lenses. The 6D MK II is killer and preserves the cost you pay for keeping the camera for the next year… there is little risk in selling it a year for now for no loss – essentially making it a year-2 year free loan.

Meant to say, if you have enough points (equipment) for gold level

  11. November 21, 2018 at 3:35 pm EDT

It’s done. I did some calculating, and after figuring what I could sell some stuff for and also some cash on hand from selling my services, it is about 200 dollars after the math. Went with BnH, since it looks like the great credit fiasco of 2017 with my application for their credit line is still not worked out (short story, it got lost in the system when I submitted it and it keeps screwing with my additional attempts to apply). Paypal has 6 months 0% financing for those that were not aware BTW.

Now to move on from convincing myself to do it, to convincing myself not to cancel the order!

I don’t think you’ll regret it. You may question and doubt yourself at first, and as Canon announces more new mirrorless bodies and RF lenses, you may question yourself even more. But given enough time and usage on the 5D4, even as it becomes more and more obsolete, you’ll probably really enjoy it. I did something similar a few years back during the triple-stack coupon code deal that Canon Direct did on refurbished stuff. I ended up getting a refurbed 6D, two lenses, and a flash, just shy of $1500, the largest non-financed single-purchase I had ever made to that date. I doubted myself for weeks and months until I was able to get a 24-105 f4L for the 6D. Even then, I didn’t take it out of the box much until I did a shutter count on it. At only 153, it soon sank in that it was a virtually brand new 6D body for nearly half what it was costing brand new. Now the 6D + 24-105 is my go-to system of choice. Meanwhile, the printer I got with my 70D in July 2014 still sits in my basement, unopened.

If you want to save yourself some $$$, I highly recommend the 24-105 f4L II. Unless you’re shooting low-light without a flash or in need of that nice bokeh, I much prefer it over the 24-70 f2.8L II, especially with the IS. If the v1 is nice & sharp, the v2 is so much better. I prefer the extra reach for portraiture and every day shooting, and even night shooting on a tripod. And now you can save yourself some more $$$ by getting a 70-200 f2.8L II, as people ditch them for the III or the (rumored) RF version. Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with a 50 f1.4 or 100 f2.8L until you can upgrade further.

      1. November 21, 2018 at 4:42 pm EDT

David S, pulling a Kevin Diaz, on Kevin Diaz! šŸ™‚ Thanks for the advice mate! I think the only thing I will regret is that now I have to sell all that gear I need to sell, and I just hate dealing with people. Already listed some stuff, getting obvious scammers making offers. BTW, everyone, if someone ask “can you ship this internationally to my (insert relative here)?” the answer is no. Thats a scammer.

I will say the IS on the 24-105mm is one of the reasons I would suggest it to someone, that and you can find them pretty “cheap” by comparison due to people unloading them. Good lens for general use, the IS makes it better for shooting nature shots or museums and so on. IS only gets you so far though, and when shooting moving subjects is almost useless. The 24-70mm F2.8 is mostly a indoor event and sports lens, two things I am getting more involved in. The shutter speeds one would use to capture the motion of a person dancing, or playing basketball, or cheering, or what have you, negates the need for IS on such a lens. I am pretty convinced that IS on lenses like the 24-70mm F2.8 actually hurts the IQ, and is why the Canon version is just so incredibly sharp compared to other similar lenses that have some kind of stabilization. I will likely get the 24-70mm F2.8 II, but plan to keep in eye open for good deals on the 24-105mm. I have the 70-200mm IS II already, man is it good, and I am looking forward to what it can do on my 5D. And for a 50mm, I use the Sigma F1.4, which I don’t think has an equal in its class. The RF Canon F1.2 probably, but I don’t have a way to compare.

Again, thanks for the useful info!

          November 21, 2018 at 9:42 pm EDT

Kevin, I always appreciate your comments. They are thoughtful, sound, and logical. You are right about the 24-70 f2.8 II, though the lack of IS is the one thing that has prevented me from getting this lens. That, and the constant rumors that it was going to be replaced “in the very near future.” Plus, until I got the 6D, I had no need. When I had the chance, I opted for the 70-200 f2.8 II. And boy do I love that lens! I jumped on that one on CPW Street Price a few years ago, and I’m glad I did. It sounds like, aside from the full-frame body, you had all your bases pretty much covered already. The Sigma 50mm f1.4, you’re right, it’s untouchable (or it was until the new Canon RF 50mm 1.2L, from all I’ve seen on it so far). I think you have done well today. I was thinking about this on my way home tonight. In the 7 or so years I’ve been following CPW, I don’t think there has ever been an “Ultra Hot” deal. And from the looks of it, it was too hot for Adorama & B&H to keep around for long.
