Massive Price Increase Overnight, Some Street Prices Still Available

Canon’s current instant rebate program ended last night with no renewal. As a result we saw a massive price increase — up to $300 on lenses and up to $500 on bodies — including a $400 increase on both the 5D Mark IV and 6D Mark II.

Many stores are closed for the next week, which makes good timing for this price increase. Once the stores re-open, we expect that the instant rebates will come back gradually, in a build-up to the Black Friday sales.

We still have a few street prices available at the “old prices” but only for a limited amount of time.

Street prices still available:

The next year or two seems like a really bad time to invest in EF glass and EF bodies. I think the discounts will need to be abnormally large this holiday season.

“Massive price increase” would seem a bit risky for Canon these days…

These “massive price increases” are not coming directly from the manufacturers. You can thank Donald Trump for these increases — these are the tariffs kicking in. And you can expect more increases in the future since Trump has said the tariffs will increase if no deals are made.

I’m not sure Donald Trump is to blame, as the tariffs he has imposed have been against Chinese, not Japanese products.

Really a “massive price increase” or just an expiration of rebates and/or street prices?

This is common Canon practice. They use rebates to lower the price of their gear, then let the rebates expire to raise the price without actually raising the base price. The MAP is the same here, it’s only the rebates that have expired. They do this to lower the price during peak times and then artificially raise it during off peak. it has nothing to do with Trump. With Black friday coming they want the prices to look high so that they can make them look low for the holiday sales. Again, common Canon practice.

Anyone who’s been paying attention to the trend would hold off on adding EF lenses to their arsenal. With the EOS R system just coming online, we should expect more R lenses on the map in the next year or so. I predict EF lenses will continue to drop prices in the next few years.
