    I would LIKE to think that 12 years on, Tamron would be able to best the optics in the Canon variant… reviews by the trusted few (Bryan, Dustin et al) will be a huge factor in me trying this one out. The big question many will have is why buy this when for only a couple hundred more I can 1st Party AF and Canon’s amazing support. I do like the fact that it’s black.

      Got to agree somewhat here, the F4 IS Canon is 1150 MAP, and can be had for less than 1100 for street price. Still though, 300 bucks is a lot of money for some people, and not everyone needs to have high end focus performance. Most the time, Tamron works fine for low key shooting, which these kind of F4 lenses are good for. I am sure it will find its audience.

    The canon 70-200f4 IS is optically nearly perfect. But its AF is slow compared to modern lenses.

      It doesn’t use the same AF as the other 70-200mm lenses? Which are known for their blazing fast AF? I don’t have the F4 IS to test with, so I really can’t say. I jsut don’t know why that model would have it’s own slower AF system. I have the older non-IS F2.8 model, and it is the fastest focusing lens I have ever worked with.

      I have seen sample images from the F4 IS, and you are pretty spot on about it’s IQ. It is pretty darn sharp.

    So is it designed for a crop sensor? Since it’s smaller.

      No, this is a full frame lens. Tamron lenses are as follows…

      Di = FF
      Di ii = APS-C
      Di iii = Mirrorles

    Why would it be for a crop sensor? Canon offers f4 lenses at reduced weight. One is an IS and one is non IS both less $$ than F2.8. If you’re doing landscape why would you need an f2.8?

    1. February 25, 2018 at 10:44 pm EDT

      2 things here. For one, why are you doing landscapes with a 70-200mm lens? For two, an F2.8 can do what and F4 can do, but F4 can never be F2.8. But if most your shots will be in good light at slow shutter speeds, the F4 IS is a pretty good “bargain” (still kind of pricey for most).

      Also, this is not for crop sensor. Tamron crop lenses are the Di ii lenses, Di is full frame, and Di iii is for mirrorless.
