Hot: 8TB WD External Hard Drive for $139 at Best Buy, with WD Reds

This hot deal from Best Buy is back and better than ever. They have the WD easystore 8TB External USB 3.0 for only $139.99. This is a fantastic price for a 8 TB harddrive.

This deal is especially popular because WD appears to be using 8 TB Western Digital “Red” hard drives inside these external drive enclosures. Instructions are available on how to extract the drive from the enclosure. This is a fantastic deal as the Western Digital “Red” hard drives (suitable for NAS) typically go for about $274, making this about a $135 savings over buying the drive itself.

Thanks Mike for letting us know!

UPDATE: There is a great guide on reddit for identifying exactly what type of drive is in these and the various implications of it. Apparently, while the vast majority of drives are WD Red, recently you may also get a ‘white-label’ drive with what appears to be the same performance characteristics.

Ummm …. not sure what the “red” hard drive is, but can this be used with a regular home computer to backup items/photos?

    1. December 7, 2017 at 5:38 pm EDT

yes of course it can. these hard drives are like any other regular external storages. really good deal!

      Red drives are for nas

    3. December 7, 2017 at 5:50 pm EDT

ooohhh …. i just looked up nas — then these are better suited for multiple ‘pooters attached to one network?

    4. December 7, 2017 at 6:57 pm EDT

They are good for that but also work well as a stand alone drive. They are better drives than their cheapest ones for sure. You can just as easily use it the way it comes out of the box without issues.

Yes very suitable for backup. Red drives from WD are designed for being on 24 hours a day (i.e. conditions common when used in a NAS)
