EOS 5D Mark IV Launch Price to be $3499 USD / $4299 CAD

We now have confirmation from several different sources that the initial launch price for the EOS 5D Mark IV will be $3499 USD (in the USA) and $4299 CAD (in Canada). This is assuming no last-minute pricing changes by Canon, which are still possible.

This pegs the EOS 5D Mark IV at the same launch price as the EOS 5D Mark III in 2012. Although the new camera is packed with a bunch of new technology (including 4K, WiFi, and GPS), it’s surprising that Canon didn’t go for a lower price point given all the competitive pressure from Nikon and Sony mirrorless.

The announcement and pre-orders are imminent, with many sites reporting midnight on August 25th. The camera is expected to ship in early September. To get notified by e-mail when the items are announced and available for pre-order, please click the below links, then click the “Notify” button.

    Wish I could justify it…

Sorry, Canon. You’re out of touch. a $2999 pricepoint would be more fitting. I bet you’ll see some strong rebates or deals coming out for this pretty quickly.

You’re out of touch. $2998.50 would be way more fitting.

So after saving $6000 for the 1Dx II… I’m having second thoughts… Should I get the 1Dx Ii, 5D IV, 2 5D III’s, or wait for the 6D I??? I currently have a 6D. I wanted the 1Dx II for sports but I don’t really NEED it, just wanted it. I do portraits, a few weddings and events so far. Oh, and in contemplating getting into Videography with whatever DSLR I choose. Any suggestions..?? Maybe switch to Sony??

Definitely higher than I expected and possibly more than I’m willing to pay. I thought for sure it wouldn’t be more than $3200-3300 and even that is a big pill to swallow. Given that the 1DX Mark II was $500 cheaper than it’s predecessor and came with a free CFAST card, I thought for sure that the 5D Mark IV would be $250-300 cheaper than it’s predecessor.
Either way, I see Canon selling boatloads of this camera to a TON of people with pent-up demand. There are still a LOT of people looking to upgrade from the 5D Mark II and my guess is, Canon knows it and has priced this camera accordingly.

Hope CPW can provide a ~ $3200 street price after several months. So far the street price for 1DX II and 80D is not very impressive.

      August 23, 2016 at 9:02 pm EDT

Exactly. Canon just doesn’t pull a price out of a hat; they do studies to show the optimal pricing at launch. They are asking for this price because their studies show they can get it, at least at launch time. The early adopter tax.

The key will be to see how quickly the price drops. The 5d mark iii, if memory serves me correct, held its initial price point for a relatively long period of time. My guess is that this model will see a modest price drop sooner, esp. given the softness in the camera industry as a whole.

Will be interesting to see what Nikon does.

    August 23, 2016 at 12:27 pm EDT

I feel the pricing is more set towards market skimming of early adopter, WiFi and GPS aren’t game changing features. 4K recording … sigh… maybe. In 2016 terms of money the camera isn’t feature rich. The DSLR market isn’t growing like it used to.

  10. August 23, 2016 at 12:32 pm EDT

Canon can (and will) charge a premium because (for the time being) they’re the king of the castle, the household name, if you will. That being said, the pricing is far too rich given the price of competing bodies from Nikon, Sony, and Panasonic.

The only good thing about this pricing is that it may entice competitors to launch deals and/or rebates to undercut Canon, especially around Christmastime. I would LOVE to switch to a Sony A7RII, but their customer service is absolutely atrocious. That’s the one thing Canon still has going for itself– Canon Professional Services (CPS) is an absolute dream to work with.

Even still, I may still suck it up and pick a 5D4 up after a year or two when the price becomes a bit more reasonable.

    1. August 23, 2016 at 1:04 pm EDT

Hopefully canon will fill the gap with a decent camera to entice people to stay with them in between this and say an 80D.

    2. August 23, 2016 at 4:32 pm EDT

Kinda in the same boat as you, Ca’Mareo…I need a second body. I know I would benefit from the Mark IV, since I have all Canon stuff, but I would like to implement the AR7ii into my system. Or, see how much the MarkIII goes for and have two of those in my arsenal. Christmas should be nice this year!!

    3. August 23, 2016 at 4:36 pm EDT

Gabriel Rodriguez Couldn’t agree more. I shoot weddings on my 5D3, as well as video. For personal use, I shoot landscapes mostly. The 5D3 has horrendous dynamic range, meaning I tend to rely on very conservative HDR to get the look I’m going for.

Meanwhile, the A7RII has beautiful DR and provides 4K video and the option to use a LOG-based color profile. Those two features would be enough for me to snag the A7RII right now (and keep the 5D3 for weddings), but I’d have to either pick up a Metabones adapter, or begin investing in Sony lenses, which I’m not sure I want to do.

I’m definitely going to wait for the real-world testing and comparison of the 5D4 against other bodies and will make a decision based on that…after the price drops a few hundred dollars, of course 😉

    4. August 23, 2016 at 5:09 pm EDT

I’m on the hunt for a second body. I have a Canon 6D. I am waiting for the A7R3 or A9R. I want something light but still packs a punch. I shoot landscapes.

      August 23, 2016 at 6:57 pm EDT

Yes, Sony’s service sucks, but their Pro support offering (at least in the US) is really good. Compare CPS (Gold tier) to Sony Pro Support then you’ll find SPS is actually a great offering! Having personally used both, I can say, my experience has been positive for both! Having said that – I couldn’t live without Sony Pro Support if I was invested in Sony, but I could live without CPS, in the Canon world – simply because Canon’s general public support itself is exemplary!

    6. August 23, 2016 at 10:48 pm EDT

      I love my 5D3, I have a A6000 as my walk around/travel cam and they’re both awesome.

    August 23, 2016 at 12:35 pm EDT

Yeah, I can absolutely see that. I’m going to receive pre-order notification, but I may wait for the first price drop/rebate and buy then. My main reason to upgrade is for image quality but I’m not sure I’m willing to pay $1500 just to have better looking images out of the 5D Mark IV vs the III.

  12. August 23, 2016 at 12:37 pm EDT

Yes, it was. But based on inflation rates, the US Dollar should buy approximately 20% more Japanese goods today, than it did 4+ years ago.

For everyone complaining about the price. Don’t buy it. No one told you to buy top of the line stuff when the 6d and 5d miii was be more affordable upon the mkiv release.

Uhmm, my bet is for the previously suggested price of USD $3299. I’ll pull the trigger if the camera comes with that Dual Pixel RAW feature for correct focusing in post processing. Otherwise I preffer to wait until the 6D Mark II.

  29. August 23, 2016 at 4:44 pm EDT

Their higher price back when the 5DmIII and Nikon D800 series was released prompted my switching to Nikon, been happy ever since.

  46. August 24, 2016 at 9:09 am EDT

I doubt that there will be any price drop for Mark 4 anytime soon. Mark 3 retained its price throughout and only dropped recently. I am hoping that Mark 4 will have much improved Dynamic range. From what I see looks like it will be a great camera.

  47. August 24, 2016 at 9:33 am EDT

Canon charges a little more but you won’t need to upgrade your camera every year. They actually last on the market for a very long time. How many DSLRs has Nikon released since the Mark III? 600,610, Df, 750, 800, 810….. Buy it right the first time. Buy Canon.

  48. August 24, 2016 at 10:06 am EDT

Roy Kuntz Get your order in.

  49. August 24, 2016 at 11:45 am EDT

I guess this is canon’s new pricing strategy. Absurdly high for early adopters then drop the price hard for people who aren’t made of gold. Just pretend the release date is 6 months from now and you should be able to get a good camera at a good price.

  50. Shag
    August 24, 2016 at 1:12 pm EDT

I see. Btw I just checked my note, 5DIII body sold as high as $3600 in May 2012 and dropped as low as $2750 in mid Sep 2012 (ebay seller adoramacamera). Let’s see if 5DIV drops below $3000 before the year ends.
