Canon Refurb Store: SL1 for $359, Pancake for $111

While we wait for a Canon Direct Store re-stock on refurbished lenses, a few other good refurbished deals:

They have the refurbished SL1 for $359.99 (after 25% off) and the 40mm Pancake for $111.99 (after 30% off). That makes a great light-weight walk-around kit.

As for refurbished lens restocks? This sale doesn’t end until August 16th. We are expecting one, maybe even two good restocks during this time. If the past is any indication, the restock will likely be in the afternoon (ET). As items will generally sell out within minutes (it’s quite impressive to watch), the absolutely best way to get in on a restock is via e-mail notification on a specific item. Last Few Big White Deals — 500mm II $8999, 200-400 $10499

It’s not really a secret anymore: many photographers have been taking advantage of super-low super-telephoto prices from Canada over the last 6 months, but not for much longer.

In early 2014, a weakening of the Canadian dollar vs. the US dollar meant you could buy super-telephotos from Canada for thousands of dollars less. The best part is: Canadian lenses come with a “Canon USA and Canada” warranty card, and are eligible for warranty service in both countries, making it a great deal.

Unfortunately this party is being shutdown: our friends to the north at Canon Canada have instituted a large price increase — 15% overnight — as well as a new MAP policy on super-telephoto lenses.

Sadly, street prices have already started to rise from lows we saw in March. We know of a few remaining great deals on super-telephotos, but only while quantities last:

Hot: eBay Daily Deal: EOS 6D + 24-105mm (Import) from Get It Digital

Get It Digital via eBay has the Canon EOS 6D with 24-105mm Kit for $1929.99. This is today’s eBay Daily Deal.

Get It Digital via eBay are not an authorized dealer, but a reputable unauthorized dealer.

This is an import version, but it is physically identical to the US model (readers have let me know that the store indicates this includes WiFi and GPS, but if you want to be 100% certain ask the store yourself). A Canon USA warranty is not guaranteed, so the store is providing a three-year store warranty.

This is $100 less than our authorized dealer street price of $2039 that expired on Sunday (the Canon mail-in rebate expired). The current best authorized dealer street price is $2229.

Warning: eBay Seller “deals-all-year” Formerly Known as Ryther Camera

Many other sites are featuring a deal from a relatively new eBay merchant deals-all-year, their eBay daily deal is a EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM for $639.99. We have been asked many times today, are they reputable? Who are they?

A quick check of their eBay ID history (eBay account required) shows they were “rythercamera” and recently renamed themselves. Read more about Ryther here, here, or here.

Although this new eBay store has good feedback thus far (perhaps they are turning over a new leaf?), we think it’s still too early and we cannot recommend this store at this time.

UPDATE (August 2016): It has been two years since deals-all-year has appeared on eBay and we have re-reviewed their reputation. Based on the strong positive feedback (99.9%) from the last two years, we have reversed our decision and now choose to list this store with the other reputable merchants on our site. We always recommend making grey market purchases through a platform such as eBay, where you can leverage both eBay and PayPal protection on your purchases.

5D Mark III and 6D Rebates NOT Extended, Expire Saturday

We have now heard a few times that the $200 mail-in rebate on the 5D Mark III and 6D will NOT be extended. They are only good on purchases made on or before Saturday, August 2nd, which means a $200 increase on the effective price of 5D Mark III and 6D until the next rebate period begins.

It’s not too late, even if you purchase now. You have until September 2nd to mail your rebate form.

If you want to take advantage of our street prices, your order should be placed by noon tomorrow, Friday, as many stores do not operate on Saturday.

The lens rebates are still valid until August 30th.
