Price Mistake: Pre-Order the 16-35 f/4L IS for $1074, 10-18mm for $249

In applying a refurbished discount the Canon Direct Store has made a mistake and is also applying this discount to all new ultra-wide-angle zoom lenses. This is a likely a price mistake.

Until they fix it, you can take advantage of a discount on five UWA zoom lenses, including a rare discounted pre-order on the two recently announced lenses. Add to cart to see discount.

UPDATE: This has been fixed, this deal is now dead.

The other three improperly discounted include:

Pre-orders at the Canon store also come with a commemorative “100 Million EF Lenses” t-shirt.

Here’s a screenshot of the shopping cart showing the discounted price in the Estimated Order Total field at the bottom right corner.

Thanks! Scored the new 16-35 f4.

  2. May 18, 2014 at 9:15 am EDT

Terrific find! They even threw in a few t-shirt when you add the lenses. I pre-ordered the new 10-18mm. Let’s hope Canon doesn’t reject these discounted preorders. Still debating the 16-35mm as I have the 17-40mm and don’t use it all that much.

No, they didn’t. Add to cart for the discount.

Added to cart. They fixed the price for the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens

Nope, still not fixed. Look at the “estimated order total” at the bottom of the cart. It is $1574 for the 16-35mm f/2.8L II, then less a $200 MIR for $1374.

This is still not fixed (despite reports to the contrary) — in cart you will see the discounted price in the bottom right corner under “Estimated Order Total”.

Worth a shot, but there’s no way they will honor this.

The Canon store is actually extremely good at honoring orders placed — once they pass the fraud verification step.

They have shipped many of the other price mistakes before.

  7. May 18, 2014 at 11:57 am EDT

David, what don’t you like at the 17-40? I was looking to get it.

    1. May 18, 2014 at 12:16 pm EDT

I actually adore my 17-40L (on my full frame). It’s my goto travel lens. On my crop body I preferred the extra stop with the 17-55mm IS.

    2. May 18, 2014 at 12:19 pm EDT

Yea I hear good things about it. I’d use it for the wide side. But you can’t beat the 249 for the 10-18 which would be good enough on my T2i. Wish there was an adapter for ff.

    3. May 18, 2014 at 1:54 pm EDT

There’s nothing wrong with my 17-40. I got it in 2003 to use as a normal lens on my 20D. It’s sharp once stopped down. I now have a 18-55stm which is great and has IS. I just don’t shoot much wide angle now that the lens is reserved for my 5D3. Hope that clears things up a bit.

    They fixed the 17-40 price.

No, they didn’t — just checked right now and I still see $714.99 in-cart, less a $100 MIR is $614.99.

The 10-18 is using “refurbish” parts! It only fits crop sensors it’s slow and it’s not an L series lens so…? What’s all the excitement about? Also are there any reviews out in this lens? And the 16-35 L II is a good buy. Save $400. Full frame sensor.

  11. May 18, 2014 at 6:35 pm EDT

Picked up a 10-18. Now to see if it shows up.

Notice that they add the “free” t-shirt to the total, THEN take the discount off. In reality, we should be paying another $50 less. Not such a great deal when you then add your sales tax.

    1. Brandon
      May 18, 2014 at 10:10 pm EDT

Check it again. It adds $50 for the t-shirt but then takes $100 off the total as a promo, thus you are getting the shirt for free plus an additional $50 off, minus taxes. It really is a great deal, especially since they have yet to be released!

        May 18, 2014 at 10:14 pm EDT

Agreed. They credit you an extra $50 for the free gift. You don’t pay tax on this $50, so it really is free.

I stand corrected – you are both right. Just placed my order for the 16-35 IS and got email confirmation with the promo savings.

I ordered the 16-35 f4 (first comment above) and my order is now showing cancelled when I look at the order status.

    1. CanonPriceWatch
      May 18, 2014 at 11:50 pm EDT

Bummer. Was worth a shot. It could also be marked cancelled due to a fraud check (those are super common), but we won’t know for sure.

        Anyone else seeing cancellations?

        1. Brandon
          May 19, 2014 at 7:33 am EDT

          Nope, still showing “Pending Shipment.”

          May 19, 2014 at 11:21 am EDT

Thanks. John, you might have failed a fraud/security verification check? It probably happens to about 10% of orders, it’s pretty crazy.

          May 19, 2014 at 1:34 pm EDT

After seeing comments from others stating that their order had not been cancelled, I decided to place the order again using a different credit card and checking out as a guest instead of logging in to my Canon account.

Canon just called to confirm the order and it appears that everything is all set. I asked the Canon rep about why my original order was cancelled and he said it was a security measure and could not provide additional information.

Thanks for the advice about the possible security issue.

Thanks for the update. Ah, yes, the “security measure”, as I suspected.

They have fixed the price error on their site. Now we wait and see if they honor all these orders or if they cancel them.

My 10-18 pre-order at $249 + tax still shows as “pending shipment” today, so looking good. The status upon order actually showed as “backordered” with an estimated ship date of 6/4, which is earlier than the end of June timeframe I had read. Will see if it holds up.

      1. CanonPriceWatch
        May 19, 2014 at 2:36 pm EDT

Yes, the release date of the 10-18mm has always been “June 4th” on the Canon site. I don’t know if this will hold up as every other store is saying June 30th.

        1. Evan
          May 28, 2014 at 1:44 pm EDT

Just got an email from Canon saying the ship date is now 5/29 (tomorrow).

Just a general comment for CPW on these “price mistakes”. I think they are more like cunning marketing strategies for reasons known only to them. Methinks Canon folk are too savvy for these kinds of “mistakes”. Just a thought …

Hmm. Canon breaking their own MAP via a “price mistake”? Interesting concept.

What a great deal. A few days before all the other stores ship, and also $50 off. 🙂

I got my piece two days back and T-shirt today. I got XL size where my size is M :(. I called canon guys, they are not going to replace it as it’s complimentary.

Looks like they are shipping out the 16-35mm f/4L IS USM “price mistake” pre-orders at $1074… like I expected them to. 🙂

Congrats on everyone who got in. This was a fantastic deal. I don’t expect to see this price on this lens for at least 18 months (maybe Holiday 2015).
