Deal Coming: 5D Mark III New for Sub-$2600 at Unauthorized Dealer

[UPDATE: This deal is now happening on Thursday.]

We’ve been told of a deal coming tomorrow, Wednesday April 23rd, on the 5D Mark III at a major unauthorized dealer — we are told the price is to be “less than $2600”.

Our guess is it’s part of the current eBay Deal Frenzy but we can’t confirm at this time. Please check back tomorrow, or get notified when the deal starts via an e-mail; click the notify button on the 5D Mark III page to sign-up.

It’s good to see that recent MAP policy changes aren’t affecting the prices at unauthorized dealers.

If you are still confused about authorized vs. unauthorized dealers, you can read our write-up on the subject.

EOS-1D X for $5599 from Get It Digital via eBay

Get It Digital via eBay has the Canon EOS-1D X for $5599.99 — a $100 price drop from last week. They only have three at this price.

They are not an authorized dealer, but are a very trusted unauthorized dealer with a history of delivering (no bait & switch or up-sell). You can read our article for an explanation of authorized vs. unauthorized dealers.

This is a tiny bit above the price of our authorized dealer group buy — but that was limited quantity, sold out in 30 minutes, and the store isn’t getting more at that price. Sorry if you missed that, but this is a reasonable alternative!

Lensbaby 5.8mm f/3.5 Circular Fisheye for Crop Sensors Announced

This new lens was overshadowed last week by the Sigma Art 50mm f/1.4, but is worth re-highlighting: we are now tracking the new Lensbaby 5.8mm f/3.5 Circular Fisheye. It’s available for pre-order for $299.95 at B&H, Amazon or Adorama. Availability is mid-May.

We think this will be popular, as up until now the only true circular fisheye option available for crop bodies was the Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 DC, at whopping $900 price tag. This new Lensbaby lens provides a true circular frame of view on a crop-sensor body (sample below) and is one third of the price. It’s a good alternative to the similarly priced Rokinon 8mm fisheye which doesn’t provide a circular view on crop-bodies.

Price Mistake: Manfrotto 502HD Pro Video Head for $85 AR at Amazon

This appears to be a price-mistake; Amazon is double-dipping on the Manfrotto 502HD Pro Video Head with Flat Base for $85.89 after a $50 mail-in rebate.

The regular price for this head is $185.89; there’s currently a $50 mail-in rebate (Amazon is an authorized dealer), but it looks like Amazon is mistakenly applying it as an instant-rebate. You should be eligible for the rebate after the Amazon $135 price, for a net price of $85. This is a steal at less than half price!

Note: Amazon is currently out-of-stock but they honor back-orders. They currently state a wait of 2-4 weeks, but knowing Amazon it is typically less than what they advertise.

[UPDATE: Amazon jacked the price up $50 to $185. I think this is them acknowledging it was a price mistake. 🙂 They seem to still be honoring any orders.]

Best Buy Breaks MAP In-Cart on the EOS 6D, by $200

After two long weeks with zero changes in Canon prices at authorized dealers (not even “add-to-cart” discounts), a dealer has finally made a move: Best Buy lowered the price on the Canon EOS 6D by $200 in-cart to $1699.99, and similarly on the Canon EOS 6D with 24-105 Kit by $200 in-cart to $2299.99.

This is fantastic. Not because of the prices, but because it looks like finally there may be some push-back against a supposed strict MAP policy. Recall, we reported that stores were not advertising lower prices (not even in-cart) for fear of repercussions, such as not having their orders filled or their authorized dealer status revoked.

We are watching to see if other stores follow, or if Best Buy is forced to step back in line…

[Update: Best Buy prices shot back up today to MAP. Does not bode well… ]
