I have both these, combine them with a 70-200mm F2.8 IS II, and get pretty decent performance. AF seems pretty spot on; I know older generations had issues with that, but I’m not really have that. As always though, there are drawbacks. You lose a stop on on the 1.4 and 2 stops on the 2, and vignetting is much heavier on the two at wide open. Nothing that I can’t solve in post. Sometimes it’s just convenient to have these and my 70-200 than it is to try to make room for my 100-400mm in an already crowded backpack. If I know I am focusing on wildlife, I take the 100-400mm. If I am not sure what I will encounter, it’s the 70-200mm plus extenders. I’ve never tried them on the 100-400mm, but I would think the hit to IQ would be considerable. The 70-200mm IS II is sharp enough to pull off some decent shots.
