Rakuten: 20% Back in Points. EOS R + 24-105 $3399, Get $680 Points

Rakuten has a great deal today and tomorrow (while quantities last). On any purchase, you get 20% back in Rakuten points towards a future purchase. As Adorama, Beach Camera, and BuyDig all have storefronts on the Rakuten platform, you can take advantage of this deal on Canon cameras or lenses from authorized Canon USA dealers.

One of the best deals is the EOS R + 24-105mm for $3399 at BuyDig, then you get back $680 worth of Rakuten points. This makes the ‘net’ price of the camera + lens only $2719! They only have 3 in-stock as of writing, so don’t miss out.

An equivalent warranty applies when purchasing via the Rakuten platform (vs. purchasing direct). Rakuten points can be spent like cash anywhere on their platform.

I am curious why this brand-new, eagerly anticipated camera is already being bundled and discounted.

This is not a Canon promotion. This is a generic promotion on the Rakuten platform for 20%-off ANY item. It is not limited to just the EOS R, but given that the EOS R is new, it is one of the best deals.

Beware, I ordered from them this morning and Rakuten cancelled my order several hours later for “payment verification” reasons. Anyone have an order successfully get pushed through to the vendor?

I got a call from someone in “address verification.” I verified it and they said it would ship tomorrow.

I had the same thing happen – order was auto canceled by their system without anyone attempting to contact me. (In the US paying with VISA, shipping to the address on the credit card.)

I contacted their support and they said that in one to two days they will get back to me. They also said that since the order was auto-canceled, it could be recreated with the 20% promotion again.

It’s a good enough of a deal that I’m going to be patient and try to ride this one out, but it’s certainly not a good customer experience.

That’s weird — mine did ship from Buydig today and will arrive tomorrow. The points did show up in my account too.

Unfortunately, Rakuten collects sales taxes for California residents which is around 8.75%. Still a good deal, but if you consider that points are redeemed by future sales on Rakuten when sales taxes are collected again, then the 20% promotion reduces down to about 10.26%. Still could be worthwhile for some purchases if you’re not willing to wait for 10% price reductions from other vendors.

I think it is becoming more common that online sellers are collecting sales tax as states close up loopholes in that part of the tax system. Enjoy it while you can in those places that still do not.
