Ok so thoughts on the lenses. So far I like what I see. The added ring for extra control is pretty cool. I have always wanted a control ring for ISO so that I don’t have to take my eye off the VF when adjusting it on the fly. They are even making one of the adaptors have the ring so that you can use it with older lenses. The 24-105mm is Nano-USM! Nice to see them not just abandoning that, as I think it is one of the more useful focus systems on the market. (Loved it on the 70-300mm IS II.) Really wish they could have made the 24-105mm F2.8 though, with this new system it seems that would have been possible. The 28-70mm F2 I think is the first of its kind, a FF zoom that is faster than F2.8. I think we can probably expect to see more of this down the road, but I have one BIG bitch about it. No IS! WTF CANON?! After we have been griping for years about the F2.8 not having it you go ahead and not give it to us on what might probably be the best event lens ever made?!?! Combined with no IBIS? Canon has been pretty well on record that lens IS is superior to IBIS, so where is our IS on a lens that clearly benefits from it? So mad about this one, since it feels like typical Canon. The 50mm F1.2 might be the update we have been wanting on this lens for a while now. Biggest gripe about the EF version is how hard it is to focus. Well, focus peaking will solve that, and I would bet the new AF system will too. I think the 35mm F1.8 is in a weird place. It’s macro lens that doesn’t do 1:1 magnification, it’s .5x (50%). But, with STM focus on a FF lens that has a fairly wide aperture I think this will be a vloggers lens. Not sure 35mm is wide enough for that, since I don’t vlog (isn’t 24mm more what people want?). It is still nice to see this though, since it’s a fast lens with silent focus for FF. Canon has been needing to add more lenses like this since video became more popular. Would prefer to see nano-USM, but based on intended use that would probably have been needlessly costly.

The drop in adaptor is really cool. It has a wheel so that you can adjust the filter without taking it out. This not only opens up several possibilities for fitler use with lenses that can’t really take one, it is a total video shooters advantage. Fisheye lenses that are adjustable for exposure FTW! Skate kids will love that. Also, I jsut feel that a filter that is behind the lens will work better than one on the front. I would guess there would be no issues with flare or ghosting, since the light doesn’t have any way of falling across it. It is jsut focused through it. I would still use good quality glass though, for minimal IQ loss and aberrations. Other cool things mean less expensive filters for big lenses. I didn’t see the size, I would guess something pretty small since the overall diameter is only 54mm. Maybe 49mm? And just to put this out there for those that might not know, there would be no point in putting a UV filter into it. 🙂
