Looking forward to seeing this lens in the real world. I know Canon said that it is basically the same, but I have a feeling that it is going to be a better performer on higher res cameras like the 5DSR and will work better with the upcoming mirrorless expected to be announced soon. Canon often makes quiet little updates to their engineering that go mostly unnoticed, since they don’t want competitors to know what they are up to. They had been secretly installing the required hardware for the new AI bounce flash for years before it was ever announced. I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out something once the FF mirrorless comes out.

There was a lot of hate towards the mkIII for not being some new innovation when really there wasn’t much to improve on anyway. Also, the base MAP is the same 2099. So we get a little upgrade on the lens coating and it will cost the same in the end once the mkII models are cleared out. I would expect to see the same 150 dollar rebate that was almost always active on the mkII to eventually apply to the mkIII. Got to say though that I was a little disappointed there wasn’t an update to the IS to bring it to 5 stops. Would also have liked to see a more robust version of their seemingly forgotten Nano-USM in a lens like this. I have used both the lenses that have it, and man is it cool. Super fast for stills, super quiet for video.

For the most part though, it’s release probably will drive the price of used copies of the mkII down, which is still one of the best 70-200mm lenses out there. I got one off KEH for 1400 in a recent sale. So friggin good!
