This looks really fun: the Wiral LITE Cable Cam via Kickstarter is a compact cable system that lets you setup cinematic long-pan film effects, using your DSLR, even in tight or indoor spaces where a drone would be inappropriate.
Setup is easy: you tie a rope between two secure locations, mount the cable cam, then direct its motion with a remote control. Top speed is a blistering 28 miles per hour, or it can go as slow as 0.006 mph — perfect for a time-lapse. It’s very affordable, at only $199, a fraction of the price of a drone, and $200 less than planned retail of $399.
The best part is (unlike drones) you can use your existing Canon SLR (via standard 1/4″ tripod mount) — up to 3.3 pounds, which is enough to support even a 5D Mark IV with a mounted 50L prime lens.
This one’s already funded to 2000% of their target with 11 days to go, so you can be sure this project is going ahead. An impressive 2,500 backers and $616,428 (and counting).
They certainly want a pretty penny for it. I’ve noticed that most items in kick starter these days are quite over priced.
Pricing is overly ambitious. $200 should be the MSRP, not $400, and $100 should be the kickstarter price, not $200.
They’ll be knockoffs soon enough for $50.
Not endorsing this product, but would you really trust a 5D4 to a $50 cable cam?
