What does “open box” mean? Is it refurbished, used, or grey market? Or brand new with bad packing?

Floor model or pristine return, usually

I bought an open box 85mm 1.2 and it was brand new. Never opened.

      Packaging was also mint

I bought my 5D3 open box from Adorama and it was pristine and shutter count was zero!

They still have the 85mm 1.2 on the open box page but the price doesn’t look like its been discounted even in the cart

Most readers are reporting their “open box” purchase was brand new never opened, as far as they can tell.

I don’t get these packages. Who wants a mkiii and the 24-105 or 24-70 f4? HOw about the 24-70 2.8?

    1. January 10, 2016 at 2:41 pm EDT

Lots of people, actually… considering that you get a significant discount (vs. the regular price of the lens) when you buy a bundle. You can turn around and sell the lens BNIB and effectively get the 5D Mark III for ~$2050-2100 new.

The 24-70 f4 is an excellent lens. I have no need for a 24-70 f2.8 so if I were purchasing I’d be perfectly fine with this combo

Phenomenal camera, but I wouldn’t buy an open box item…save for the brand new/factory sealed one instead.

    1. January 10, 2016 at 6:50 pm EDT

Readers are reporting that it’s not really open box, at least for the previous sale.

    2. January 11, 2016 at 3:01 pm EDT

Strongly disagree, these are pretty much brand new items, once opened for whatever reason they are not allowed to sell it as new… besides this, it’s Adorama we are talking about here… not some shady online website.. I’ve bought several cameras and lenses like this from adorama and b&h and it’s always a great deal

You get the same warranty as new. I just bought a 17mm tilt shift lens for work and the gal said its a new lens never been used. Just open box price with the warranty and all the items it comes with new. For me it was a good buy
