Amazon Lightning Deal: Samyang SY14M-C 14mm F2.8 for $269

For the next three hours only, Amazon has the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 IF ED UMC for Canon EF for $269.99. This is $50 off the regular price of $319 for this sharp, ultra-wide angle, manual-focus lens.

This lens is designed for full-frame cameras and one of its best uses is for astrophotography. Read a great (astrophotography-focused) review of this lens.

I purchased this lens under the Rokinon label in Jan. 2013 used for $300 and have had no regrets. The lens is extremely sharp and renders color very neutral. There is a bit of moustache distortion if shooting on a full frame camera, though it’s not easily noticed. BEWARE though that this lens is fully manual: no autofocus, no auto aperture and, because of its extreme wide angle, it will be a challenge for those with no experience with manual focus. Focus peaking via Magic Lantern helps.

I found it to be a great video lens for B-roll wide shots. It is almost fisheye on full frame.

Sold out by the time I got to it unfortunately. This lens has been on my wishlist for a while, I’ve got the 24mm version but find it’s not wide enough for some of the night sky things I do.

I wonder if the Samyang version of this lens suffers from the same de-centering focus issues some copies of the Rokinon version suffer from.

FYI, the Rokinon version for both the Nikon and Canon mounts were on Lightning Deal sale earlier in the week.

The way Facebook works, sometimes you’ll see older posts (that are now expired) in your news feed.
