New EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Announced — Surprise, Only $125

Canon just announced the new EF 50mm f/1.8 STM. Surprise, it’s available for pre-order for only $125.00 — the same as the current MAP price on the older EF 50mm f/1.8 II.

We are very impressed. Canon appears to have delivered a lot more value in this 50mm f/1.8 refresh, with the inclusion of the STM stepper motor, a metal (not plastic) mount, and rounded 7-blade aperture for rounder bokeh. All while keeping the price at a very reasonable $125.00 — Canon’s lowest (MAP) priced lens.

The lens is now available to pre-order (B&H, Adorama, Amazon) with a estimated ship date of May 21st.

what type of photography would this lens be good for?

    1. May 11, 2015 at 3:19 am EDT

      Portrait possibly.

    2. May 11, 2015 at 7:54 am EDT

I have used a Canon 50mm f/1.8 at rock concerts and even landscape photography.

    3. May 11, 2015 at 8:49 am EDT

It excels at portraiture. Occasionally I’ll also throw a 50mm (generally the f/1.4, but given these enhancements, I don’t see why not this one) on a FF body as a walkaround setup, as the focal length becomes “normal”.

    4. May 11, 2015 at 9:04 am EDT

This would fit on a 5D mkIII?

    5. May 11, 2015 at 9:16 am EDT

      Yes

    6. May 11, 2015 at 2:56 pm EDT

🙁 ahhh man not so sound like a dick but if you have to ask what this lens would be good for or if it will fit on a 5Dmkiii then I’m thinking you jumped the gun on an expensive camera without much knowledge on the gear and photography technique.

    7. May 11, 2015 at 5:45 pm EDT

      every type ma.

    8. May 11, 2015 at 6:06 pm EDT

It’s for a gift. I’m not the photographer lol

    9. May 11, 2015 at 6:07 pm EDT

Emilio OlivasYou do sound like a dick. Who cares about what camera he has. It’s easy to get EF and EF-S lenses confused. And to be honest and expensive camera would a be a Medium format. Hassaelblad, phase one or something that would cost the price of a brand new BMW. For what the 5D3 does its fairly cheap and not impossible to own. DICK!!

    10. May 11, 2015 at 6:14 pm EDT

Leonard you idiot!! A 5D3 is not for beginners!!! You with your wAy up to pro gear!!
Medium format is typically used in studios or expensive commercial work! One doesn’t not simply use a hassy to walk around and snap photos
If you can easily confuse EF and EF-S lenses then you should be shooting pro dslr cameras

    11. May 11, 2015 at 6:15 pm EDT

Frederick I’m sirry for bruh a dick!! Thought u were the photog

    12. May 11, 2015 at 9:26 pm EDT

If one can afford a markiii nothing wrong with that at all. The camera will out last any crop camera with much better Quality everything. My 5d mark lasted 10 years and still going strong. Now also have 6d and the build quality is not even close to the same. So why be a jerk to someone asking a simple question.

    Tara you’re next lens

  7. May 11, 2015 at 4:24 am EDT

Uh….I got this lens from Best Buy…same price a year ago.

    1. May 11, 2015 at 4:47 am EDT

50mm 1.8 ii more likely. This has a different focus system (STM), and more blades. Auto focus will be faster, and bokeh quality will be better.

    2. May 11, 2015 at 8:13 am EDT

Plus metal mount…instead of plastic…the article says

    3. May 11, 2015 at 2:59 pm EDT

Pfft I got a 5Dmkii from best buy 3 years ago for $2300 and then the 5Dmk3 was announced now that’s a huge ugh!!

  8. May 11, 2015 at 5:55 am EDT

What they changed the “dubstep” “transformer” AF motor to this lens finally! Haha better late than never.

    1. May 11, 2015 at 7:31 am EDT

I’ve never heard a better description of it. Ever. You win the Internet today.

    135 L IS pls.

    1. May 11, 2015 at 8:38 pm EDT

Come on man. You don’t need IS on the 135. You prefer to shell out an extra $1K for the few times you can use a monopod? I use my 135 all the time, and never even use a monopod or tripod. Great shots every time.

    2. May 11, 2015 at 8:40 pm EDT

Cmon man. some people are more shaky than others and a monopod is cumbersome in the dim forest where i like to use it.

I’m a nub guys…I just bought my wife a Canon T5i and she only has the basic 18-55 lens. Will this fit the t5i? I would love to purchase it so she can take portrait photos…

    1. May 12, 2015 at 4:08 am EDT

      Yes it will fit

    2. May 12, 2015 at 8:56 am EDT

Yes, it’s a perfect “next” lens for your wife.

    3. May 12, 2015 at 9:18 am EDT

Yes. One of the lenses everyone new to dslr should have.

    4. May 12, 2015 at 11:06 am EDT

  45. May 12, 2015 at 1:12 pm EDT

Will this fit my 2007 Canon rebel digital xti? And how’s the bokeh with this lens?

  46. May 17, 2015 at 12:39 am EDT

Believe this is the older one. I’m torn between the two. Any suggestions are welcome!

    1. May 17, 2015 at 1:45 am EDT

That specific eBay vendor (beststopdeals) is not recommended — our readers reported major incidents with them last year. You can get it from much better dealers for only a few dollars more.

    2. May 17, 2015 at 1:45 am EDT

And, for $40 difference I would definitely go with the new STM one.

    3. May 17, 2015 at 7:27 am EDT

Awesome! That’s all I needed to know. Thanks!
