Small Warning About AllNewShop’s eBay Deals (5D Mark III / 1D X)

Several readers have already received their EOS 5D Mark III ($2149) and EOS-1D X ($4199) from AllNewShop via eBay‘s on-going sale. They have excellent prices (the lowest we’ve seen), and readers report receiving brand new items as advertised.

The catch is: although the auction (as advertised) is for a grey market / import body, readers report that the store will call and attempt an up-sell to the Canon USA model (claiming that the grey market body is inferior). Do not fall for this. The grey market version is physically identical to the Canon USA version, and is not a different product. Stick to your guns, politely remind the retailer that as per the eBay agreement, they are obligated to sell you this camera body at this price. They will process your order at the eBay stated price, and our readers report that they are shipping Canon USA models with Canon USA warranty cards anyway — win!
(Please note, it’s possible that they really do have both grey bodies and Canon USA bodies, and you may not have the same experience in receiving a Canon USA model.)

As they do eventually process the order, and ship a brand new camera at a fantastic price, this is just an up-sell (not a bait-and-switch). We still think it’s a great deal, but want to warn our readers to expect the call and stay firm during the up-sell. The deals are still live now.

Thanks Chris & Toni for the reader reports. If you also ordered this deal, please comment on what you received in the comments below.

Are they shipping they grey market and sticking a USA canon warranty card in there ?

Canon USA warranty cards have the matching serial number printed on the card. It’s likely a legit warranty card (I’ve never heard of grey market sellers going so far as to counterfeit cards complete with matching serial number.)

Wow, somebody is getting a total steal here. On the other hand, with a whole new sensor technology and new AF system on the horizon, I can see why they are dumping the remaining bodies at such fire-sale price

These aren’t fire sale prices (yet). Wait until the replacement models are announced, and THEN you’ll see fire sale prices.

Are they an authorized reseller? Otherwise the warranty is likely still not valid.

They are not an authorized dealer. So buying from them would be considered category two, “US model from unauthorized dealer”: http://www.canonpricewatch.com/blog/authorized-unauthorized-dealers-and-grey-market-explained/

It is a common misconception that you *must* purchase from an Canon USA authorized dealer to be guaranteed a Canon USA warranty. The only requirement is that you purchase a Canon USA model. The warranty follows the *product* and the terms must be fully disclosed on the official warranty card (as per the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975.) Since their written terms on the warranty card do not clearly state that you must purchase from a Canon USA authorized dealer, that is not a requirement for the product’s warranty.

Now, it is good advice that you should buy from a Canon authorized dealer if you’d like to be sure to get Canon USA warranty, as you really can’t be sure when you buy from an unauthorized dealer whether or not they will ship you a grey market or a USA model (until you receive it). Also, many stores try to dress up grey market bodies as US models (e.g. “US Seller”, “USA Warranty” — note, not *Canon* USA warranty), so it’s a bit tricky to make sure you are getting a Canon USA model.

If you don’t want to go through this headache, be sure to buy from an authorized dealer (or an authorized dealer via street price!)

And for your reference, here is the complete legal text of the Canon USA warranty card. As you’ll note, there are no restrictions other than having been “purchased and used in the United States or Canada”.

    Thanks for this! Great information.

Tell me, have any readers reported getting US Warranty cards for 1DX models or are all the reports for 5D3’s?

It’s mostly 5D3s but I’ve received *1* report for the 1DX. I would like to hear more 1DX reports to be certain.

I wanted to let you know that I received my 5D III two nights back – it is a USA model with Canon USA Warranty Card that has a matching serial number. Came to me with zero shutter count. Also, I did not receive an “up-sell” call as some others might have. Thanks for all you do!
