B&H DealZone: Drobo 5D Thunderbolt/USB 3 Storage Array $469

Another great B&H DealZone deal, today only (or until sold out):

B&H Photo Video has the Drobo 5D Thunderbolt/USB 3.0 Storage Array for $469.00. This is the lowest price we’ve ever seen for this storage array.

This is $130 off the regular price ($599) for this storage array, which features lightning-fast Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 connectivity (no other storage array offers both). If you rather a network-attached storage array, check out the Drobo 5N.

We have been fans of Drobo ever since we survived three hard drive failures with all our files intact!

Drobo sucks. Stay away. It’s 100% their system. You lose anything – you have to PAY them to recover it. Crap service. I dumped mine after the third drive failure – the thing also eats drives. For some reason they fail faster in a Drobo.

I’ve had the opposite experience. I have 2 Drobo at home and both are functioning extremely well. I used the 2nd generation (FW800) for years before upgrading to the 5D for the Thunderbolt on my Mac, the speed of the 2nd generation wasn’t enough for photo editing. I’ve had drive failures and never lost any data, it’s great. I’ve not had it eat drives any faster than any other application, hard drives are the weak link there, not the Drobo. Remember, with a hard drive it’s not if it will fail, it’s when.

Having a backup of your backup seems redundant, but I don’t worry about total data loss because I use an online backup system as well. Yes, it’s 100% Drobo’s proprietary file system, but it’s safer than any other RAID type and has served me well for many years.

I highly recommend the Drobo, congrats to anyone who picked one up at that price, you won’t be disappointed!
