EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II Announced: Pre-Order at $2199

Canon finally announced the highly anticipated EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II at a hefty $2199 USD introductory price tag, representing a 65% premium over our street price of $1329.99 AR for the Mark I version of the lens.

The new lens comes in two inches longer and 3 ounces heavier than its predecessor, but now sporting 4-stop IS (vs. the 2-stop IS of the original). The newly published MTF charts for the lens look quite impressive. Another thing is for certain, that annoying push-pull zoom is gone!

Pre-order at B&H, Adorama, or Amazon, or Profeel.

It does look very impressive. I need to look at the charts vs the 70-200Lf2.8II. wondering if I should sell it for this one .going from f/2.8 to f/4-5.6.interesting times:)

Canon is pricing themselves out of the market… I’ll stick with my MkI for now.

People saying it’s overpriced based on what?

I thought it seemed pretty cheap compared to their other lenses.

for an F/4.5 it is way overpriced, it might perform well if paired with the new 7D2

When i was trying to decide if i should get the version 1 of this lens I was debating going with the 70-200 IS 2.8 and the 2x converter, or go with the 100-400 (both version 1). I went with the 70-200 set and glad i did. I guess i don’t see why not to get the 70-200 as it is 2.8 up to 200, and with the 2x converter you have 140 to 400 at 5.6, just as this lens has.

Not overpriced if you can afford it! Simple as that!! I’ve had the Mark 1 since 2004 and love it but always hated the 6 foot close focusing and the antiquated IS. I do like the push-pull but have other lenses that rotate so no big deal. I am eagerly awaiting my new MKII. Considering the price of the MK1 when it was released and the price of it today, with inflation factored in, the MKII at $2200 is a steal!!
