EF 16-35mm f/4L IS ($1199), EF-S 10-18mm IS STM ($299) Announced

Just announced: two widely anticipated Canon ultra-wide-angle zoom lenses.

The MTF plots of the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS ($1199) look fantastic, and we can see how this lens is an upgrade vs. the 17-40L ($739) and the 16-35L II ($1499), for those wide-angle photographers not needing the f/2.8 (read: landscape photographers).

And we’re more than impressed at the low pricing ($299) of the 10-18mm. It offers a more than affordable way for to explore ultra-wide-angle photography on a crop body, nearly half the price of the other Canon options and still cheaper than third party UWA zooms.

Both lenses are now available for pre-order. Availability is June 30th.

Not a rumor, check Canon’s website!

This is not a rumor post, this is our blog post about the actual announcement.

      We don’t post rumors.

That’s pretty expensive for an f4 lens. I’m sure you can buy a used 16-35L f2.8 for around $1200.

    1. May 13, 2014 at 12:23 am EDT

Agreed. Again, I don’t see the point of that one yet. I do like the $299 10-18mm. I think that’s an excellent price point. The 10-18 + 18-55 + 55-250 is looking like a great starter kit.

this is going to be a very popular lens it has IS, most videographers use the 16-35 2.8 or 17-40 f4 for crane and glidecam shots. With this having IS and on a glidecam footage will look amazing. Calling tomorrow to see if they have an ETA!

    3. May 13, 2014 at 9:07 am EDT

      June 30th is the ETA.

Too bad the pre-orders buttons aren’t working on B&H or Adorama. It’s working on Canon’s site though, but the tax is a deal-breaker. For video, I like it a lot.

its working on B&H. Already pre-ordered mine. Check again

  4. May 13, 2014 at 12:35 am EDT

It has IS which doesn’t sound entirely necessary, but it’s interesting and more options never hurt. It’s not like it’s replacing anything in the line-up.

    1. May 13, 2014 at 12:37 am EDT

I can see them trying to put out 4 lenses at each of the focal ranges (24-70, 70-200, 16-35). It’s a strategy that has worked so well at 70-200, recall Canon pioneered the 70-200 f/4 and Nikon copied many years later…

Some people will just spend the extra $400 and buy the IS version just because — and it’s also a tiny bit wider.

  5. May 13, 2014 at 12:42 am EDT

The variety of lenses from Canon and even the third party support is why I generally suggest Canon over Nikon to people. Even if you agree they are more or less equal in performance Canon is just so much more abundant. Making sharing gear easier and the used market is just so much bigger.

Guys thank you so much for the news!
    Any idea on release date?

    1. May 13, 2014 at 12:52 am EDT

      June 30th.

  7. May 13, 2014 at 12:49 am EDT

Wow! the new ultra-wide zoom is half the going price of a new 10-22!

    1. May 13, 2014 at 12:52 am EDT

      My thoughts exactly.

I’m a sucker for ultrawides, so the 16-35 with IS is intriging. But I know I can get a great handheld keeper rate with my 6D and 17-40L down to 1/8 of a second, 1/4 if I put my mind to it. Now if I still had my 7D, I’d buy the 10-18 in a heartbeat.

You must have really stable hands, because I never dare to go below 1/15s with my 17-40L on my 5D3. I really love my 17-40L, especially for its versatility when travelling, and weight. I’m a tiny bit disappointed to see the 16-35mm f/4L IS weighing as much as it’s f/2.8L II brother.

  9. May 13, 2014 at 9:13 am EDT

Based on the MTF chart on Canon’s site, the contrast and sharpness of the 16-35mm f/4L IS is fantastic. I’m really looking forward to seeing some tests and reviews for it.

Newbie for AWA . I just bought the 17-40 F/4 during the 15% off last week. I am not sure if I need to keep it or return based on this announcement or just buy the Samyang 14mm and be happy..aahhh decisions decisions

For sure, keep the 17-40L at 15% off refurb. Even if you end up not liking it, or want to upgrade to the 16-35 f/4L IS you can sell it for about as much as you paid as a used lens.

The 16-35mm f/4L IS is almost two and a half times the price of your 17-40L.

  11. May 13, 2014 at 11:03 am EDT

Ya the center to corner performance looks outstanding for a UWA. Especially when compared to the current 16-35. I’m very interested in this lens. Will wait for the price to drop like the 24-70 f/4.

I like this option of f/4 on 16-35 IS very much… I am definitely buying it, just not this year. Next Christmas in 2016.

      May 13, 2014 at 1:55 pm EDT

I have the 24-70 II and 70-200 II already… so this will fit in nicely my lens collection. Couldn’t justify buying the 16-35 II because I don’t shoot enough in that range, but f/4 will do nicely for me.

  13. May 13, 2014 at 3:23 pm EDT

No news on a new 7d

  14. May 13, 2014 at 3:35 pm EDT

I would never pay that for an f4. Just principle.

Think the 10-18 will be a huge seller at that price. Hope someday we’ll see a 14-24 2.8 but in the meantime I have the 16-35 to hold me over.

  16. May 13, 2014 at 4:01 pm EDT

    f4 no thank you!

  17. May 13, 2014 at 5:41 pm EDT

Why can’t this ultra wide at $299 be available like May 30th.. Was looking for one for a wedding June 14 at a good price.. This is great though!

    1. May 13, 2014 at 6:40 pm EDT

Actually, it looks like the 10-18mm might be available on June 4th, according to the Canon Direct Store pre-order page. http://www.canonpricewatch.com/go/Canon-Direct-Store/EF-S-10-18mm-f4.5-5.6-IS-STM/p=5440&m=38

  18. May 13, 2014 at 7:12 pm EDT

    Sweet!

  19. May 13, 2014 at 11:13 pm EDT

Will the 2.8 version remain available or be updated also?

    1. May 14, 2014 at 7:46 am EDT

No idea. I would expect that one day we’ll either see a 16-35mm f/2.8L IS, or even perhaps a 14-24mm, but knowing Canon it could be years and years.
