These are not new deals (they’ve both been around for a week now) but they are great deals worth mentioning again:
B&H Photo Video has the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM for $1229.00, after a $200 mail-in rebate. This price is even lower than the double-dip price from last November/December. Amazon also has this price.
B&H Photo Video also has the Canon EOS 6D with 24-105 Kit for $1999.00. You can also sweeten the deal by adding a PIXMA PRO-100 printer for free after MIR. Amazon and Adorama also have this price.
I already have the 70-200 2.8II and 70-200 f4IS. Do I need this?
Clearly not. 🙂 I’d stick to the f/2.8L II IS, except when portability/weight is a concern, and you already have the f/4L IS. Sure, you might lose 100mm of reach, but that is likely not a big concern here.
What about this lens vs the 70-200 f4 IS if I own neither. I guess the question is, is the 70-200 vastly superior to the 70-300 in the 70-200 range?
Tough to say. People say the IQ on the 70-300L is comparable but keep in mind you already lose 1/3rd stop aperature above 100mm.
I have never been huge on this lens — I own both the f/4L IS and the f/2.8 IS II; I’ve grown to dislike non-constant aperature zooms. 🙂
It is a very good price point though, although I found myself wanting my 70-200 II whenever I shot with this.
Good points. I do some wildlife, so the extra 100mm sounds appealing. But 5.6 is so slow. Maybe I’ll try the 70-200 4IS and if need be, use a 2x extender. Gotta love f/8 AF on the 5DIII.
Yeah. Even 1.4x gets you to 280 @ f/5.6, which is pretty much your 300mm right there. 🙂
I think I’ll just go ahead and get this lens. Since I cant afford the 300mm 2.8II
