Finally! I miss the deal last time. When I was on vacation to Asia.

This price is great, even though MIRs suck. I am so afraid of this lens right now though. Both DPReview and Canon Rumor forums have huge (10+ page) threads on how the 24-70 II has had severe quality control issues ever since this March, namely with a tight zoom ring that makes loud ticking noises. There are some guys in there who claim they’ve played the exchange game with B&H/Amazon/etc. for like 4 or 5 times and keep getting bad copies. I really am scared to jump on this deal.

If you find this soothing at all, I bought one on the last sale and it doesn’t click at all and is sharp as a razor.

You got lucky! In fact most of the users on those threads are ones who bought on the last $1699 sale. They are only exchanging multiple times because if they cancel altogether, then they would have lost out on price; otherwise, they would have definitely just cancelled and then ordered a few months from now when the bad batches are hopefully out of circulation.

So is the double dip real? Adorama or BH will not send generic box w/o the UPC code and one actually can file the $300 rebate on top of their $300 discount?

Anyone already got the lens before and did the double dip?

I’ll let other readers comment, but this is definitely real, and people have already successfully gotten the rebates from previous sales.

Ugh bought last week for $100 more; does adorama price match themselves in less than 30 days for a refund?

      Yes, call or e-mail them.

To their credit (adorama rocks), they did this with no hassles.

Unfortunately for me, my lens has the dreaded click problem (documented on many user forums) so need to return it!

This is in response to entlassen:

I received this lens during the double rebate period as well and I got a March 2013 manufactured model with the centre-pinch style cap. It does not produce any clicking noises and I find it very very sharp (comparing to my Canon 70-200 F4 IS) and my Canon 15-85 which I just sold so I can move towards Full frame.

The only “issue” I have with the lens is that there is a small squeak when retracting the barrel from around 28 mm back to 24 mm if you do it quickly enough. Canon has told other customers that this is due to the “weather-sealing gaskets” breaking in and that this is part of normal operation. Now, I haven’t been in photography long enough to know If this is really an issue like other people making it out to be but if this still issue persists in another few months, I will have Canon take a look at it and fix it within the warranty period.

Conclusion: I would say you’re safe to buy the lens as long as its from a reputable company like Adorama and BH. Their return policies are good enough that even if you don’t want to deal with this issue, you could return it in the end if you don’t like the copy you receive.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but there is a a 3-page thread in Canon Rumor’s lens rumors forum with a user with the same squeaking problem.

Got mine back in October from B&H during the sale. Had a Nov 2012 production date. No issue whatsoever… Loving it every day. It’s on my camera 90% of the time. Rebate took around 3 weeks. Spent it on another lens… Go figure…
