Canon’s Silent Labor Day Price Increase

Those who watch Canon prices would have noticed a significant price increase Labor Day weekend. Most items did not change in price, but several of the popular high-end L lenses went up significantly (anywhere from 13%-18%). On average, lenses are 3.8% more expensive than they were last month. The following graph tracks the “EOS Lens Price Index”, which reflects the average trend in new lens pricing at authorized dealers:

I was really looking forward to a Canon lens instant rebate…

As was I. They lowered the price on 5 lenses, and raised the price on 20.

After the Labour Day week, the prices will decrease again?

It’s listed for current instant rebates good till Sept 28th, so maybe after that?

I was about to pull the trigger on the 85mm 1.2. Saw the price hike yesterday, talked to a pro who uses it, and she said if she had it to do over, she’d stick with the 1.8. Thanks, Canon, for saving me money by raising your prices!

Same here. I was about to buy the 70-300L… But my non-L seems a lot nicer all of a sudden. Canon just lost more of my money.

Thanks canon for helping me make my decision. I was having trouble justifying a new lens. I’m no longer on the fence.

I’m still holding out hope that there’ll be a good holiday sale that reverses some of this. Set a price notification (if you haven’t already) and we’ll e-mail you if we see a sale.
