Bogus….1 minute after getting the “notice” I’m on the phone with Canon Direct….and they have none in stock…….
People who ordered online last time got their bodies shipped the next day. (See the discussion on the Facebook post from last time.) If you call, they will tell you they have none.
I also just called the store, and got through after 15 minutes on hold. It’s interesting, the stock page says “in stock” but if you put it in the cart it says “backordered” there. The person I spoke with says they definitely don’t have cameras in stock. I mentioned reports that one person who ordered two days ago got a shipment notification. The sales person said that when they do get in a shipment, it goes out to the people at the start of the backorder list. They were unable to reconcile this with the reports of things being shipped. I wonder if the “in stock” notice from two days ago and today are both screwups, and if they made a conciliatory shipment (subverting the backorder queue) to those who ordered two days ago? Or if this is just the 100th and 101st bug with the canon retail site? (I have a long history of filing bug reports with Canon Direct.. and the IT team in New York doing absolutely zero to fix them.)
I’ve placed an order, and the email I get back from Canon is “Unfortunately, not all of the items you ordered are available at this time. Please see below for items that are currently on backorder. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience while we work to fulfill your order.”
Meantime, the “in stock” status still appears on the product listing itself.
Update: two days later, no shipping notice – so not an experience like the single person who mentioned this on your facebook page. I didn’t get my hopes totally up though, I was expecting this might be the case – also especially since /only/ the front SKU page was listing as “in stock”
but the shopping cart said “backordered.”
Positive update (sorry, just applying to me!) through a complete stroke of luck, I found a brick and mortar, traditional photography store on Facebook that had just posted an image of it having received their latest shipment of R3 bodies. I asked if every one of the boxes had a pre-order behind it – and the owner reached out to me and said that they had one overage (I’m guessing a cancellation). He posted the single camera through his retail website last night, coordinating to give me a heads up, and I purchased it a second later – and I got a FedEx notification today that it’s on its way. I’m so excited!
..I suppose then that the only takeaway I have is, maybe try searching on Facebook for R3 camera posts from photo stores, and reach out respectfully and patiently, to see if they have a way to help you while keeping their inventory low (helping them)? 🙂
Good luck, all!!
You have to order when it’s showing in-stock *in the cart*. Once it shows backordered in the cart, it’s too late. The product page doesn’t mean anything. I had another reader email me to let me know they ordered about ~2 minutes after receiving our notification and their item shipped yesterday.
…and as I write this the Canon website still says “In Stock”.
