I figured it wouldn’t be long before we started to see the price on this come down. It’s Canon’s game, high base price, rebates and incentives later. And the street prices are even better as a result! Granted, most people would be just fine with the mkII lens. The only real difference between the two is that the mkIII has ASC coatings, which reduce flare, especially from strong backlight. This is mostly an issue for portrait shooters that use a backlight in at least some of their shots, or sports shooters dealing with strong stadium lights (and even then probably not going to be a deal breaker). Everything else is the same, same optics, same layout of optics. Contrast and sharpness are just barely better, due to the better coating, but it is not likely to matter it is so minute. A note on the IS – The mkII rating is 4 stops, the mkIII is 3.5, but it is the same IS system. The way IS is rated has changed since the release of the mkII, so don’t sweat that little detail. So if you were wondering what the difference is, there you go. The mkIII at this price though, if you are a working pro, it can probably be justified if you are looking for a 70-200mm F.8 and don’t already have a mkII. But again, you can probably do just as well with the cheaper mkII. It’s personal choice.
