KOBRA Flash Modifier Now Shipping — 10%-off for CPW Readers!

We featured the KOBRA Flash Modifier during their very successful Kickstarter campaign — and we’re excited to see that the product successfully launched, thanks in-part to the support of many great CPW readers!

KOBRA also made quite a splash at the recent WPPI show. We got the chance to check out the product and we were quite impressed. It’s surprisingly light, especially if you’ve been using the magnetic-based flash diffusers, with a large surface area for very soft diffuse light. The KOBRA band was very snug and secure. The LEE filter gels are sturdy and not flimsy at all, and the best-kept secret is a nifty gel wallet that fits both the filters and business cards.

For a limited time, they’re offering 10% off, for CPW readers! Use coupon code WPPICPW to see the discount at checkout. The full system (band, diffuser, gels, and wallet) is $86.40 after discount, and the modifier and band alone is $58.50. Continental USA shipping is free. This deal expires on March 27th.

If you purchase something through a link on our site, we may get a small share of the sale (at no cost to you). Please read our disclosure for more info.

I want to try this out just so I can tell people how it works. I have had a lot of success with the Magmod system, but that doesn’t mean this can’t also work. A lot of these flash mods out there though, fall so short of what they claim to do, and I would just like to see how this one holds up.

I joined the kickstarter campaign so I have this… I found that it really does through diffused light forward like they say it does. For me though, when I take photos of my kids at home, I don’t use it because I’d rather bounce the light off the ceiling and walls to get an even light rather than a focused forward light. I think this Kobra modifier would work better in large spaces in which there is nothing to bounce light off of…. like at a wedding venue, outdoors or other event space.

Completely agreed — whenever possible, I use bounce.

The KOBRA has replaced my Gary Fong lightsphere, it’s much more efficient, lighter, doesn’t fall off, and doesn’t look dorky. (We often refer to the Gary Fong as “the tupperware”.)

Ha! I used the Gary Fong also and had the same annoying problems. I like this design better. Will have to try it out!

I have the Kobra too, also from the Kickstarter campaign. It arrived a few days after my big Christmas party shoot, so I never got to use it for the very event I ordered it for. I’ve only played with it just a little since, and from what I’ve seen so far, it has produced similar results to the Lumiquest system I purchased years ago. The advantage of the Kobra, as it was with the Fong Lightsphere, is when you go vertical. But, unlike all other modifier systems I’ve used, it is by far the easiest to pack and deploy. (Lumiquest packs the easiest, but is the most difficult to deploy.) The band is a real PIA to put on the first time, so I just leave it on my flash all the time now. The Kobra seems like it would work the best in on-camera flash in larger rooms with tall ceilings.

I have this from Kickstarter also. I have used it at 2 events with this results, it really shines at dim events with high ceilings. Our company holiday party was at a hotel ballroom and it worked great there. With the kids at home it’s just too bulky to chase them with, I usually just boost ISO. If you shoot adult events, it’s perfect.
