EOS R: Canon’s Full Frame Mirrorless, To Be Announced Sept. 5th

The Canon EOS R has been thoroughly leaked — with both photos and specifications of the camera and new “RF” lenses made available.

We can look forward to a 30.3mp full-frame mirrorless with an new “RF” lens mount. EF and EF-S lenses can be mounted with an adapter. A Dual-Pixel CMOS AF system supporting over 5,000 AF points with a range of EV -6 to 18 is one of the most highly touted features; other highlights include an adapter system which supports drop-in filters (one filter for your entire existing EF lens lineup!) and of course the small size and low weight. At 580g, this weighs in somewhere between a Rebel-class and 77D/80D body.

We’ll be watching this closely with the rumored announcement on September 5th. We’ve setup the Canon EOS R page. From that page, you can sign-up for notifications for pre-order opportunities, as well as the inevitable street price that we’ll have on this long-awaited and game-changing offering.

Hmm. Still waiting on the official announcement, but it looks like there will not be IBIS and only one card slot. I think this is a mistake by Canon, and likely is their usual game (gimp this for something better later).

I’m dissapointed, but not outright put off by it. I currently don’t have a FF camera, and have been thinking about getting one. The 5D is just too much for me, since I don’t really make money from my shooting. I think something under 2K would be appealing, and the 6DmkII is gimped on it’s AF. The EOS R apparently has over 5000 AF points and -6 EV, making it pretty ideal for low light shooting. Depending on real world reviews of it I could see myself with this. Again, still waiting on the official.

The specs to me look like a body somewhere between the 6D II & the 5D IV. Probably a bit closer to the 6D II.

I am thus considering this body to be the 6D III.

Canon will eventually build either a 5D type body or a 1D type body with mirrorless.

Since the 5D IV is fine by me already I kinda wish they would just go straight to the 1D body and make it stupendously good.
