EF 600mm III Pre-Order $12999 or EF 600mm II Street Price $10399

The most pre-ordered lens (from last week’s announcements) is surprisingly the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III USM. Several retailers are reporting a higher than expected number of pre-orders placed. Impressively, Canon’s managed to make this new lens almost 2 pounds (22%) lighter than its predecessor.

With a delivery date already pushed into December, we are predicting that supply of this lens will be limited. If you want to receive the lens shortly after release, we recommend a pre-order.

The new lens release has also increased interest in our street price of $10399.00 on the older Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM. Still a great lens and a $2600 savings over the new release. We don’t expect the price on the old lens will decrease, even with the introduction of the new lens.

When your choices are wildlife lens or new car… lol, looks brilliant though.

I think a big draw is the weight. I know I’m stating the obvious. It’s lighter and longer than the much-touted 500mm II. Sure it’s more expensive than the 500 II or 600 II, but it’s much more portable and has outstanding reach.

I’m sure it is also sharp edge to edge, with little to no CA no matter the light position, excellent color, and will likely become the new standard of wildlife lenses. Canon might not go balls down on their bodies, but they know glass. Hope it isn’t another 70-200mm F2.8 III fiasco though.

Good points. But ‘balls down?’ That’s a new one on me. I’m seriously tempted by the new 600. But I have the 500mm Ii, and a 1.4 III, and a more or less tight budget.

Nice problem for a company to have with a $13,000 lens selling so well that demand outstrips supply.

Do you have any idea of EOS R sales?
