Last Week for Canon Rebates, Next Rebate Values Leaked

UPDATE: We’ve had a few other reliable sources step forward to give conflicting information. It sounds like it’s still up in the air on what the next Canon rebates will be. Thus we are retracting our previous statement on the new rebate values. The only thing we are sure of at this time is the current rebates are scheduled to end on January 3rd, 2015. We’re sorry for the inconvenience.

The current Canon mail-in rebates expire on January 3rd, 2015. We now have more info on the Canon rebates that will begin on January 4th. We are told the most popular items will see a significant drop in rebate (and thus an effective price increase):

We are told almost all items will have their rebates slashed or eliminated altogether.

Historically, the November/December timeframe has been the best time to buy Canon, as we see the largest rebates of the year. True to our predictions the Canon Minimum Advertised Price remains strongly enforced and we don’t expect prices to change in the next week. Check out our great street prices.

To be eligible for the current mail-in rebate, purchases must be made before January 3rd, 2015. You don’t need to receive your purchase by then, it just has to be ordered by that date. You have until February 3rd, 2015, to mail your rebate claim form.

If you purchase something through a link on our site, we may get a small share of the sale (at no cost to you). Please read our disclosure for more info.

Do you have the complete list of lenses on the new rebate form? Wondering if the 24mm TS-E will be discounted this time around.

I don’t have the full list yet, but it would be extremely doubtful that they would add lenses to the rebate list.

I guess its time to get the 70-200 f2.8II before the price goes back up.

    I don’t want to be a PITA,
but the 2014 April to July 5th rebates were almost double.
    70-200/2.8ISII had $300 off,
    24-70/2.8II had $300 off.
    24/2.8II had $200 off.

In September there was a permanent price drop on the lenses. For example, the 70-200II and 24-70II dropped $200 each. Then in December there was a $100 permanent price drop.

So the current price is effectively $150 lower than April.

Here’s the details on the price drop.

One should not only look at the rebate value, but the pre-rebate price.

I guess technically I should change my statement, “Historically, the November/December timeframe has been the best time to buy Canon, as we see the largest rebates of the year.” to “Historically, the November/December timeframe has been the best time to buy Canon, as we see the lowest prices of the year.”

Yep. I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw 200-300 rebates in the summer again. I could imagine the highest volume for mnfgs are Q2 and Q4 – In April you are buying your gear for summer traveling and right now you are buying presents and stuff.
The perma price drop is very welcome, but it will only become sweeter when we see a larger rebate in combination with street prices.

I would be surprised. Based on the pricing history that we’ve been tracking for the last 5 years, I doubt it; the April prices are historically not as good as the Holiday prices.

(The only time they’re larger are for new products that didn’t have a big Holiday rebate.)

The perma price drop was exactly so Canon wouldn’t need to rely on a $300 rebate to make the prices ‘good’, it was getting ridiculous. If they hadn’t price dropped, we’d be seeing a $450 rebate right now. Most people don’t like big rebates and would rather see a price drop.
